Discovering one of the most important sites of Europe, in Montreal du Gers,

Discovered in 1987 by Gérard Bézerra, now mayor of Montréal du Gers, the remains found on this exceptional site date back to the Miocene, seventeen million years ago. Owned by the city of Toulouse, which entrusted its use to the Museum of Natural History of Toulouse, it is continually the subject of new research every summer. Its surface is 1.5 ha of which only 400 m² have been excavated to date.

Since the beginning of the excavations, more than 20,000 bones have been the subject of thesis and scientific work carried out by international teams. Ninety species have so far been identified, including four that were previously unknown. Notably Ampelomeryx ginsburgi, a species of giraffe deer, a huge lion-like predator, the Megamphicyon giganteus, the Hispanotherium beonense, a rhinoceros; and two wild boars, Eurolistriodon tenarezensis (for Ténarèze) and Hyotherium lacaillei, in homage to Michel Lacaille, director of the Museum who has worked hard on the project.

The public has open access to the excavation site until July 27th and on reservation after this period. Explanatory signs are available to visitors, and excavators will answer questions.
